In case you missed the meeting here is my memory:
1. The "Just Do It List"
These are items the City agreed to do soon. I took notes, so I hope I
got these right:
Enforcement/Education efforts to reduce speeding and other traffic
violations
Signage study to look at missing or unneeded signs in area
Increased enforcement of regulations regarding commercial vehicle
parking
Study of pedestrian facilities
Increasing sidewalk widths on some streets--this was also mentioned
later with regard to Maryland and Brookes Aves, time-frame uncertain.
Modify light cycles at Summit/ Brookes and Frederic/Chestnut to make
pedestrian crossing easier.
Remove double yellow lines that exist.
Increased enforcement of rules and laws regarding 7-11, pawnshop,
check-cashing store.
Encourage Mattress Discounters to finish construction on facade facing
Brookes Ave.
2. Ad Hoc Citizens Committee being formed.
An Ad Hoc Committee of interested citizens will soon be formed to
continue discussions and feedback with City Staff and consultants.
Anyone interested should contact the Honorable Mayor, Sidney Katz, by
letter or email (SKatz@ci.gaithersburg.md.us).
3. Other proposed changes -- I did not take notes on this part, please
correct any errors.
Replace existing lights with more decorative fixtures on existing
utility poles, evaluate placement options.
Allow parking on both sides of Walker Ave.
Add median-type entrance features at the Frederick Ave. end of all the
streets.
Widen sidewalks on Brookes and Maryland Aves.
Install 'chokers' on Brookes Ave. (and Maryland Aves I can't remember?),
these are places where peninsulas are brought out from the curb on both
sides of the street to narrow the roadway to approximately 20'. They
are usually landscaped, and parking is permitted along the shoulders
between the chokers.
Install raised crosswalks with textured asphalt that resembles bricks.
Install raised intersection at Highland and Maryland Ave.
Stripe a bike lane on Russell Ave.
Encourage selection of one refuse hauler to serve area--this requires
one or more citizen volunteers to coordinate the effort. Expected
benefits are less noise, lower fees and trash on street fewer days a
week. Participation would be voluntary.
The City does not propose speed humps, closing any streets, or
undergrounding utilities at this time.
There probably were other items I have omitted, I believe the City may
provide a written summary later on.
