Tom,
I guess that I had imagined that such an underpass would cross under the tracks
at an oblique angle to ameliorate the distance/geometry problem. That would
of course mean a longer underpass and more tear-up of CSX right-of-way,
but in the end one could potentially almost make the transistion from West
to East Diamond sort of a brief S-curve that dips under the tracks in the middle.
But I don't really have a grasp of all the factors, costs, trade-offs and so on.
It just seems like something that could be done, and I agree -- a realistic
engineering analysis would be extreemly useful.
