I do not think it is wrong to say a "crisis" situation exists with respect to
the at-grade railroad crossings in Gaithersburg.

These crossings are extrememly dangerous to pedestrians as well as drivers.
There are simply too many cars standing waiting for long freight trains to
pass. Sometimes the cars waiting at rush hour to head westward, down
Chestnut St. toward 117, stand directly on the rails. We know because we
watch them daily from our home on Chestnut St. It's only a matter of time
until someone else is seriously hurt or even killed.

I'm not clear, has a committee been formed to investigate the feasibility of
alternatives to these at-grade crossings? I think the benefits would far
outweigh the costs. Even if we ignore the safety issues for the moment and
consider alternatives only in terms of attracting more families and
businesses to our town.
